Internship for students in Photojournalism

(Photos: Dimitri P.)

Quebec Press Photos offers the possibility to aspiring press photographers and photojournalists to participate in an on-call 6 week internship program.

You'll get hands-on experience on the actual news terrain and learn to put into practice various techniques to shoot news events.  Like all interns, you'll learn and use proper IPTC captioning and transmitting techniques which are a mandatory requirement by all major news organizations. You shall use the internship period as an opportunity to put into practice what you learned in class, to show your skill and build a portfolio of events that Photo Editors are looking for. The internship is not a simulation - you'll be attending real events - and work alongside with other accredited photojournalists and press photographers.

Photos filed by interns are carefully evaluated and selected photos will actually be transmitted to NewsCom International Wire, where more than 2200 newspapers worldwide have access. The internship program is on a volunteer basis and no commitment is required by the intern.

The internship program is free to join by qualified candidates. Because we're not charging any fees to enroll into this unique program and arrange media access to events, interns must agree that no form of payment is to be expected. The potential sales of the photos (of which Quebec Press gets a percentage) are returned back to fund the necessary resources to keep the internship program running. It must be emphasized that the internship program is not an opportunity to make quick cash: It is to give tools to newcomers to enter the field, acquire the necessary experience by gaining media access to real events, obtain professional feedback on the performance, file photos, get known by actual Photo Editors, learn the tricks of the trade, build a portfolio, and develop a workflow to begin a career in photojournalism. Interns retain full copyright over their images and can use them as they wish, or even also file/publish/sell them elsewhere if they wish.

Interns can be from any part of Canada. To be eligible for the internship at Quebec Press Photos, candidates must have their own professional or semi-professional SLR digital camera system. Interns who wish to cover sports must also have at least one fast long lens. Candidates who are enrolled into a photojournalism program or show an extreme interest in photojournalism are welcome.

Field of interest may be anything from the following categories:
News, Fashion, Sports, Aviation, Arts & Entertainment, Lifestyle, Wildlife, Nature, Stock, etc. Interns are free to cover any public event they wish provided they report to the Photo Editor. Events must be of regional, national or international interest. (local events which are of interest only to the local community are not suitable to be filed to the wire since other than the local weekly, no newspaper or magazine is interested in. i.e. unless a public figure is involved, private car accidents, local fires of non-historical buildings are to be avoided)

Coverage of events requiring special credentials/access is strictly assigned by the Assignment Director of Quebec Press.

Interested candidates for an internship can contact Dimitri Papadopoulos at:

Because we're more interested to see photos than reading CV's, please provide a link to a PhotoShelter/Flickr/SportsShooter/Website with photo samples of what you consider to be your best work. (If you already have a CV feel free to attach it, but it should be no longer than 1 page. Use it to describe your experience related to photography)
